Action is the Antidote for Despair! Earth First!

Welcome to the North Coast Earth First! Website

North Coast Earth First! is a non-violent movement, based in Humboldt County, CA, focused on saving old growth Redwood and Douglas Fir forests in the Pacific Northwestern area of the U.S.

We also seek to shift logging practices away from corporate industrial liquidation logging and towards selective and responsible forestry.

Our movement has had a long history of fighting for civil rights and exposing corruption, both in the courts and in the media, and these missions continue to this day, in 2008. Your help is needed to keep it all going! Read on to find out how....

A Bit of History

In 1985, Maxxam Corporation, based in Houston, Texas, took over the Pacific Lumber Company, in Humboldt County, California. This takeover was accomplished with consolidated shares and junk bonds, and then Maxxam dumped a huge sum of its debt onto Pacific Lumber, forcing the company to log it's forests at an unprecedented rate, and targeting the Old Growth Redwood and Douglas Fir forests.

In response, the North Coast Earth First! movement was formed, in the non-violent civil disobedience and direct action traditions of Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and Rosa Parks. Well over one thousand people have been arrested in defense of these forests, and people are risking their lives, at this very moment, to save these ancient wonders.

Nanning Creek/Spooner Tree-Village

Timber harvest plan #05-097, named "Bonanza" by Pacific Lumber Co., contains at least a dozen Old Growth Redwoods, which are slated to be destroyed by Maxxam Corp./Pacific Lumber Co. Located in the Nanning Creek area of the Eel River watershed, "Bonanza" sits just above the company-owned town of Scotia, home of the Pacific Lumber headquarters and one of their three mills in Humboldt County, CA. "Bonanza" is home to an Old Growth Redwood named "Spooner" by activists, and is said to be one of the largest, tallest trees that some long-time activists have ever seen.

Fern Gully

Timber harvest plan #01-446, named "Fern Gully" by activists, is in the Freshwater Creek watershed, which drains into the Humboldt Bay and then into the Pacific Ocean. Fern Gully is home to several Old Growth Redwoods, making it potential habitat to the marbled murrelet, a federally listed endangered seabird. Under the Endangered Species Act, this area should already be protected, yet it is currently threatened by Maxxam/PL. "Fern Gully" stands above Garfield Elementary School, yet another reason to save this rare and ancient grove.

NCEF! Media is dedicated to supporting the non-violent struggle to save ancient forests, in Humboldt County, CA, by getting the word out behind and beyond the "Redwood Curtain."

We do this by creating independent media, and occasionally working with large broadcast networks.

We have a channel on YouTube, a podcast on iTunes, streaming video, and videos on Google Video and Blip.tv, with a wealth of history and information, so that people can educate themselves about the issues and develop their cutting edge of facts and truth.
